FAQ

bullet

What is your full name?

Richard Alan Turko (needless to say, I don't normally get things monogrammed)

bulletAny kids?  Nephews or Nieces?

No kids.  I have two nephews - Tyler (born in October of 1992) and Troy (born in August of 1994.)  They live in Mesa, Arizona.  They're very cool kids!

bulletAny pets?

Jake and Sean.  They were born in June 2002.  We adopted them through Petco from a great organization called Purrfect Pals.  It's a "no-kill" cat shelter in Mount Vernon, Washington.  Jake thinks he's a dog...he actually retrieves small dog rawhide sticks.  Sean goes crazy when he hears the ice maker...he makes a bee-line for the kitchen hoping that we'll drop an ice cube so he can lick it before it melts.

bulletWhat was your first car?

A 1967 Ford Mustang (dark green with a black vinyl roof)

bulletWhat are you driving now?

On October 15, 2005 I purchased a 2005 Toyota Prius.  I swore I would never pay more for a car than my parents paid for their first house ($ 14,500.)  Never say never!  Why the Prius?  Honestly, I'm very concerned that our dependence on foreign oil in the US is driving (literally) our domestic and international policy.  The Prius is a gas/electric hybrid vehicle.

bulletYou don't have one of those "vanity" licenses plates, do you?

Guilty!  My car is licensed with Washington State plates of "CAN8DN" (CAN-8-D-N...say it over and over until it makes sense.)  It's very fun watching others in my rearview mirror as they try to figure out what it means...and the joy that they get when they figure it out.

bulletWhat is your favorite book?

My favorite books are ones that I enjoy reading on the beach while vacation.  These include Like People In History by Felice Picano and the Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin.  They may not be great classics of civilization but they are enjoyable page-turners.

bulletWhat was your favorite vacation?

In 2000, Rob and I visited New York City and Boston.  In New York I was introduced to the musical Rent, visited the World Trade Center and the Empire State Building, ate at Becco and Sardi's, bought "faux-lex" watches on Canal Street and saw Tom Brokaw at Rockefeller Center.  In Boston I introduced Rob to whole lobsters and outlet shopping in Kittery, Maine.

bulletHow do you treat yourself?

A trip to Canyon Ranch in either Lennox, MA or Tucson, AZ.  I've been to Lennox twice and Tucson once.  Always expensive but always worth it!  When I can't go out of town I go to The Chairman in downtown Seattle.

bulletWhere were you on September 11, 2001?

Rob and I were visiting Paris.  We were scheduled to return to Seattle on September 13 from London.  Instead, we had an extended visit in London (at the expensive hotel that we had treated ourselves to for our last night in Europe!)  It was awful to be away from home during those days but it was a privilege to see the absolute outpouring of sympathy and support from then English and French people we encountered.

bulletWhat's the best bargain you have discovered lately?

A membership to the Seattle International Film Festival.  Besides receiving discounts on tickets during the festival you also are invited to private screenings throughout the year.  In the last two weeks alone, we've been invited to four screenings!

bulletAny volunteer work?

In July 2005 I began working with the Evergreen Radio Reading Service.  They are part of the Seattle Public Library system and are responsible for recording audio programming for the visually or reading impaired.  I'm currently doing a show called "Those Opinionated Columnists" which airs on Thursday at 9pm and Sunday at 8pm.  I read syndicated columns that appear in the Seattle Times, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and the Tacoma News Tribune.  In order to listen you'll need an SCA-capable radio.  Tune to KUOW-FM (94.9 FM) and then flip the SCA switch.
